Prof. Ajay Rane, Professor and Head of Department in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the James Cook University School of Medicine, Queensland, has been awarded the prestigious Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award (PBSA) 2025 for his outstanding contributions and exemplary community service. The award was conferred upon him by the President of India on January 10, 2025 at the 18th Pravasi Bhartiya Diwas Convention in Bhubaneshwar.
Prof.Rane is a pioneer in advancing women’s health, dedicating his career to improving the quality of care and advocating for medical innovations that have positively impacted countless lives. Through his charity, Flourishing Women, Prof. Rane has encouraged the global medical community to treat women with fistulas by donating time, expertise and surgical skills. An advocate and activist, Rane endeavours to protect the health and reproductive rights of the world’s disadvantaged women. He was instrumental in setting up a fistula unit at K G Hospital in Chennai and also runs an orphanage in Chennai for girls abandoned by their families.The PBSA serves as a testament to his unwavering dedication, innovation, and the spirit of service that transcends borders.
The Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award is the highest civilian honor conferred upon Non Resident Indians (NRIs), Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs), or organizations/institutions established and run by them. Recognizing significant contributions in various fields such as public service, philanthropy, arts, science, and business, strengthening India’s ties with its global diaspora, this year the Award has been conferred upon 27 individuals from across the globe.
